Serious Game Design Framework for Vocabulary Learning of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Overview

The researchers have started to utilise the potentials of serious games (SGs) for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to learn and improve various skills related to the spectrum. However, it is apparent from the literature that SGs have been least utilised for the vocabulary learning of children with ASD. The task to design serious games is hard; this task for the vocabulary learning of children becomes more challenging as there are no existing serious game design frameworks (SGDFs) to provide guidance throughout the design process. The framework and its components play a vital role as it spells out what needs to be incorporated into the serious games. Therefore, we constructed a framework that can be used as a basis to design vocabulary-based games for autistic children. The overall presentation comprises of five parts.

The first part of the session presents the detailed insight on how the serious game design framework (SGDF) was constructed to design SGs for children with ASD to learn vocabulary. This part also highlights the differences between constructed and existing SGDFs and the importance of using constructed SGDF over other frameworks.

The second part of the session presents the applicability of the SGDF by showing SGs designed and developed using SGDF. Children with ASD may not be able to provide feedback to improve the usability of the SGs.

Thus, the third part of the session presents the different ways to improve the overall usability of the SGs for these children.

The fourth part of the session presents the experimental results of the SG developed using constructed SGDF.
